The One Project: Bringing depression and anxiety into focus

I generally look at the funny side of life, but depression and anxiety is no laughing matter. Many entrepreneurs and startup founders suffer from depression but few take the time to acknowledge it. Hard work, super-ambition and hyper-creativity, all those qualities that push entrepreneurs forward in their pursuits, can also come back to bite them in the butt.

Every picture tells a story

It’s called The One Project and at its core, founder Bryce Evans is creating a website that is using photography as a form of non-verbal communication and a platform in which depression and anxiety can become much easier to explore and discuss.

Evans and his team of counselors and therapists have created a simple set of therapeutic photography techniques to help individuals learn, heal, and grow. With The One Project, individuals can share their stories with photos while simultaneously helping themselves and others reach a happier, more productive and authentic place.

Photo therapy as emotional communication

It has been proven time and again that creativity and art therapy are valuable tools for emotional wellness. Judy Weiser, psychologist, art therapist and author, is considered the world authority on the techniques of PhotoTherapy and feels that photography can act as a form of emotional communication.

In fact, photography-as-therapy has less to do with “art” and more with exploration.

Says Weiser, “No prior experience with cameras or the photographic arts is needed since all these [photographic] techniques involve people interacting with their own unique visual constructions of reality. [Photography] can be particularly successful with people for whom verbal communication is difficult for physical, mental, or emotional reasons, as well as those in situations of social exclusion.”

A storytelling community with resources

If it’s true that a picture is worth a thousand words, then we’ve all got quite a story to tell and share.

In the United States alone, statistics show that over 34,000 suicides occur annually as a result of depression and/or anxiety. Meanwhile in Canada, 1-in-5 individuals suffer from the same. The One Project helps individuals begin to explore themselves and tell their story using photography in a safe and gradual process, through their personal dashboard, online courses, storytelling and resources. But it doesn’t stop there: every time someone participates in The One Project, they are contributing new data to help mental health professionals develop a better understanding of mental health.

Your life in a snapshot

If you had to describe your life in a photograph, where would you begin? Would it be happy, sad or a combination of both with a variety of shades in between? The One Project just may be the platform you’ve been waiting for.

An open door to share the real you with the world.
