Modern feats of science
At AGBeat, we write a bit about sustainable building trends, but a recent construction project in China has captured our attention, putting many other sustainable designs to shame. The Broad Group recently built a 30-story tall hotel prototype near Dongting Lake in Hunan Province, completely built with prefabricated modules, all done within 360 hours, or 15 days.
While the speed demonstrated is incredibly ground breaking (literally and figuratively), it is equally impressive that the building claims to be five times more energy efficient than traditional structures. The efficiency is gained by their internal air quality monitoring system and external solar shading.
Given its location, the prototype has also been tested by the China Academy of Building Research and is able to withstand a 9.0 magnitude earthquake.
The company lists the benefits of pre-fabrication:
- Higher precision in fabrication (+/- 0.2mm).
- More coordinated on-site construction management.
- Shorter construction time span.
- Lower construction waste.
- Also many other health and energy features are included in Broad Sustainable Buildings (BSB)
The construction was done 90 percent in the factory and 10 percent on site, producing only 1.0 percent construction waste, an extremely admirable level to produce.
