5 tips to help you quit your corporate habit

Should you ditch the 9-5

Gritty writer, Rasmus Lindgren is known for promoting the idea of starting a “lifestyle business” and quitting the 9-5 grind, saying this type of business is simple to set up and scale, and is secondary to your personal life goals.

While it’s not everyone’s cup of tea, we can tell by his writing that he appreciates that, but offers that the true goal is for people to spend more time with family, travel, and pursue personal passions rather than sitting at a desk for eight hours every day. Lindgren himself has recently published a book showcasing his theories and only works three to four months a year.

Lindgren tells AGBeat there are five ways you can quit your own corporate habit in his own words:

1. Think forward!

People tend to think now and here. Job security, bills to pay this month etc. While it’s a good think to think about your bills, you can also quickly become lulled into a situation where one day takes the next.

You need to think forward of where you want to be in 5 or even 10 years. Set a goal of how your life and work situation should be at that time. And it is ok to work 50 hours per week with just up to 4 weeks of vacation time per year until you’re 70 and have two false hips?

2. Realize that you will never get rich in a 9-5

I’m not saying that money is everything but yet a lot of our goals and dreams here in life depend on them. The problem is that in a 9-5 you’re trading your time for money and that will never scale. If you want more cash? Don’t haggle a raise with your boss, quit instead and build a business that doesn’t rely on selling your own time.

3. People no smarter than you are already living like rockstars

You don’t have to be a brain surgeon or rocket scientist to start a lifestyle business, it just takes dedication and hard work.

4. There is never a “right time”

Accept that you will never know everything, so you might as well make the decision right now. Making a decision is something done in an instant. It doesn’t take any time. You are just holding back from making it because of fear. Accept that and make the decision now.

5. Start your lifestyle business while still in a job

It’s perfectly valid to start your lifestyle business while you’re still working for the man. Not everyone is a twenty something guy with no obligations. There’s no need live of bread and water for years while starting your business. Also once you’ve made your first $$$ you can see that your business is viable and it’s just about scaling it bigger (and then you can quit your job!).

The takeaway

If you’re looking for a way or a reason to quit, no matter your motivation, Lindgren has offered helpful ways to kick your corporate habit.
