6.8 million Android and Apple devices activated on Christmas

Millions given tech toys for Christmas

According to a report from Flurry.com, both Apple (iOS) and Android devices registered on Christmas Day experienced a “massive influx,” as measured by registrations through the company’s servers, coming in through their 140,000 plus apps. Flurry reports that combined new device activations for iOS and Android rose from an average of 1.5 million per day during the first three weeks of December to 6.8 million devices on Christmas Day, a jump of 353 percent, compared to a total of 2.8 million new devices detected on the previous record set on Christmas Day, 2010.

App Store activity also skyrocketed with the activations, with iOS and Android app downloads on Christmas Day rising 125 percent from an average of 108 million daily app downloads for the first three weeks of December. Flurry notes that the increase in app downloads is smaller than that for new device activations on a percentage basis due to the higher baseline from apps being installed onto the already-large installed base of devices.

The biggest increase Flurry saw in downloads for Christmas Day was around 9 AM with a second jump around 11 AM where it stayed until roughly midnight. The only problem that we hope to see fixed by next year is that Flurry does not break down downloads between Android and iOS, but tells Mashable.com that the two are “neck and neck.”

Despite the companies not making data publick, Google Senior Vice President, Andy Rubin reports that 3.7 million Android devices were activated on December 24th and 25th, affirming Flurry’s assertion that the two are neck and neck.
