Android finally opens the door to in-app purchases

Android keeps rolling out the features

Android has continually been making improvements to their operating system, adding new features and upping their game with elements that rival Apple.

One such addition came this fall: the addition of Android Pay and it was well received. Millions of people hopped on board to try out the feature that allows users to quickly and safely pay for items at millions of stores in the US directly from the mobile app.

All you need to use Android Pay is the app installed on any NFC-enabled Android device (KitKat 4.4+). Next, you’ll add your credit and debit cards to the app and you’re ready to pay on-the-go. No more digging for your wallet and worrying about where your information is going.

Tap and pay, securely

Today, however, Android is taking their Pay app one step further: they announced on their blog, users will now be able to use Android Pay to speed through mobile checkout within many of their favorite apps. No more finding your credit card, or worrying about accidental purchases. Just tap the Android Pay button in the app, confirm your information, and you’re good to go. This allows Android users to experience mobile shopping in a whole new way.

Thankfully, just like Android Pay in-store, the in-app version will not share your card details with the merchant; instead, a virtual account number is used so your details remain securely locked away. Just tap and pay and you’re on your way.

As more apps get on board, you win

Android expects more and more apps to add the ability to use Android Pay as an option to speed through mobile checkout. This should help improve adoptability significantly: as more and more apps get on board, more and more people are likely to give Android Pay a shot, if for no other reason than to try out the sheer novelty of the concept of “tapping and paying.”

As an added incentive to try out this new feature, some apps are offering discounts for using Android Pay: you can receive $20 off from OpenTable, $10 off on a Lyft ride, $10 off DoorDash, and more. Additional discounts can be found here.

Have you purchased anything in-app with Android Pay? If so what did you think? If not, do you plan to in the future?
