Why your business might not appear on Google Maps after all

Google Maps is more than just how people find you

One of the easiest ways to market your business is to ensure that your website appears on Google maps when potential customers search for local listings. Kevin Ekmark over at Trustworkz provides a very comprehensive breakdown of several reasons your website might not be appearing in Google’s map listings.

For one thing, your website needs to be up to date, with plenty of content that will help match the search terms with your website. This includes the name of the business, the location, the phone number, the services you provide, and other keywords.

Have you verified your profile and claimed your listing?

If you haven’t done so yet, be sure to claim your local listing on Google by creating and verifying a Google My Business profile, with a link to your website. If you already have a Google My Business account, double check it and update it for accuracy.

If you still aren’t showing up on Google Maps listings, Google may be trying to verify your information through other local listing websites such as Yelp, Bing, or Yahoo. Make sure you have listings on these sites and that they are up to date. Ekmark’s article also includes a handy link that helps you search the web for all listings about your business and to find inaccuracies.

What if you are really low on the list?

Perhaps your business shows up on Google maps, but is very low on the list. You can improve the ranking of your business by encouraging customers to write reviews online. The more reviews, the better your ranking.

Of course, you’ll also want your business to show up in a search if your customers are out and about and using their smartphones to find you. Google’s search engine results adjust to best fit the user’s location when searching from a cellphone. So be sure that your company also has a “mobile web presence.”

All of these tips should help you ensure that your business is listed on Google maps. Thanks, Mr. Ekmark!
