Mapping the great indoors
This month, Google Maps celebrated its sixth year and on the heels of the milestone, the company is releasing their newest version of Google Maps for Android devices which not only offers a new way to switch between features in the toolbar and a new “Places” home screen, but the great indoors will now be mapped!
Google Maps offers the freestanding map directory of airports, malls, retail stores and other public spaces and because the app knows where you are based on your GPS location (which is surprisingly accurate), it can guide you to the other end of the mall or to the gate where your flight is already boarding and amazingly, it even knows what floor you are on.
Chikai Ohazama, Product Management Director at Google Maps said in a statement, “Detailed floor plans automatically appear when you’re viewing the map and zoomed-in on a building where indoor map data is available. The familiar “blue dot” icon indicates your location within several meters, and when you move up or down a level in a building with multiple floors, the map will automatically update to display which floor you’re on.”
Click here for a list of all indoor maps currently available, a list that we anticipate will grow exponentially and in short order.
