Galileo: iOS-controlled robotic iPhone device

Rotating tripod for iPhones

California design studio, Motrr has designed a 360 degree rotating tripod, dubbed the “Galileo” that upgrades the iPhone video experience, especially useful for teleconferencing. What is fascinating is that the Galileo is controlled by the person on the receiving end of the line who swipes their finger to tilt or pan the camera.

When monitoring children, the device can be controlled by the receiver (guardian) or when teleconferencing, a dynamic presentation can be given and the receiver can control the iPhone to follow the presenter.

The idea was inspired by video chats between co-founder Josh Guyot and his toddler while on business trips. Guyot said, “He holds my wife’s iPhone and walks around the house showing me his toys, drawings, and even the cat. But many times he will get distracted by something and put the iPhone down.”

“Then there I am, sometimes thousands of miles away on a trip lasting several weeks, missing my family, and looking at a video of the ceiling.”

Additionally, the device comes with an open SDK, which will allow app developers to create custom software for the device. Motrr indicates they plan to get to market by June.

Kickstarter.com is “the world’s largest funding platform for creative projects,” wherein projects are posted to the site and anyone with a credit card can pledge money to fund the projects, but the twist is that a project must reach its funding goal before time runs out or no money changes hands because “creators aren’t expected to develop their project without necessary funds, and it allows anyone to test concepts without risk.” The site also allows project creators to keep 100 percent ownership over their work and offer products and incentives in return for pledges.

Motrr only has 17 days left in their fundraising drive, and because they have met their funding goals, they will make it to production. As fundraising continues, pledges of $85 or more will get a Galileo before stores or the rest of the market with free shipping, which is a substantial discount from the $129.99 retail pricetag.
