General Assembly’s creative twist on education
General Assembly offers a unique take on entrepreneurial education, starting off originally as a coworking company, later evolving into a full fledged education company. They call themselves “education and opportunity,” covering technology, design, and entrepreneurship as they teach the next generation of startups how to thrive. Classes are offered online and in eight physical campuses which facilitates collaboration and enhanced learning opportunities within the entrepreneur community housed on their campuses.
Since its inception in 2010, the company has raised a total of $14.3 million in two rounds of funding, which include dollars from well known investors like Alexis Ohanian, Hosain Rahman, and even Zappos’ CEO Tony Hseih’s Vegas TechFund (which makes sense, as the company will be expanding to Las Vegas this year).
Education and events for the tech and design sector
General Assembly was co-founded by Brad Hargreaves, Adam Pritzker, Matthew Brimer and Jake Schwartz, and their first expansion took place shortly after being awarded a $200,000 grant in 2011 from the New York City Economic Development Corporation. Fast forward to today and there are campuses in places like New York, London, and soon to be Vegas and Berlin, among other cities.
