Glass is a gorgeous medium that technologists have found ways of using in various inventions, with Jason Giddings seeking to do the same. Kickstarter.com is “the world’s largest funding platform for creative projects,” wherein projects are posted to the site and anyone with a credit card can pledge money to fund the projects, but the twist is that a project must reach its funding goal before time runs out or no money changes hands because “creators aren’t expected to develop their project without necessary funds, and it allows anyone to test concepts without risk.” The site also allows project creators to keep 100 percent ownership over their work and offer products and incentives in return for pledges.
The video above outlines a new Kickstarter project and this glass multi-touch keyboard and mouse that uses smartphone-like technology and open source software to track your fingers when you tap on the glass, germophobes will rejoice at no longer scraping out the crevices of their keyboard with rubbing alcohol and q-tips.
The set has bluetooth support, a rechargeable battery and a metal base to keep it rigid on your desk and for anyone that pledges $350 or more, they get a keyboard and mouse when it hits production lines.
As of publication, Giddings has 272 backers for a total of $67,843 of the $50,000 goal and there are still 31 days left to pledge, which means that this project will definitely get funding since it surpassed its goal, so if you want a glass keyboard and mouse, it appears the concept will be funded brought to market.
What is the money used for? According to Giddings, “Your pledges pay for prototypes, tooling and pre-production efforts required to put this product in your hands! The mechanical portion of the product is designed. The PCB design is in progress. We will be building prototypes and developing the source software and the software development kit. Once everything comes together, tooling will be created to manufacture the glass, metal and plastic parts in the assembly and production units will be delivered!”
