Long standing problem with Gmail
Anyone that uses Gmail can tell you that a weekly check of the junk/spam folder will uncover emails from clients, friends, parents or retailers that you otherwise wish to receive email from. It is typically unclear to users why Gmail has deemed any email spam unless it is a Viagra ad from China.
While Google boasts the accuracy of their spam filter is one of the top reasons consumers are loyal to Gmail, users have long wondered why some items were thrown into the spam folder, often frustrated by the occasional missed emails.
Google Software Engineer, Ela Czajka said in a statement that starting today, Gmail will show a “brief explanation at the top of each of your spam messages” to help you learn why it was put in the spam folder. Additionally, the message will give more information about potentially harmful content within the email.
“We hope that this is not only interesting,” Czajka added, “but also helps you learn about scams and other harmful messages that Gmail filters out. Whether you prefer to leave your spam folder untouched or do some educational digging, the information will be there for you.”
Simply go to your spam folder, open a spam email and see the new explanation up top that will look like Gmail’s example below (click to enlarge):
