Google+ honeymoon over? Traffic study digs deeper

Google+ launches, skyrockets, now what?

We recently reported that Google+ has reached 18 million users, making it the fastest growing social network in history.

According to Paul Allen, who has become known as the unofficial Google+ statistician, if the current rate of growth continued at approximately 763,000 new users every day, Google Plus would only take four to five months to reach 100 million users.

New data released from Experian suggests a slow down in U.S. traffic to Google+ and users’ average time on site as of last week. Experian reports that total unique visits to Google+ dropped 3% from the previous week while the average time users spent on the site dropped 10% to five minutes, 15 seconds.

Contradicting projections

While some are projecting doom for Google+, Experian reports make it clear that their data is derived from users that have opted in to being monitored, with roughly 2.5 million users contributing.

Some individuals completely shut down their Facebook accounts and migrated to Google+, many dubbing themselves Google+ experts, but is the honeymoon over? Perhaps the doom analysts are jumping to conclusions, as any network will experience different levels of growth over time, with some weeks rising faster than others.

Inevitably, time on site will wane as will growth, but at its current pace, Google+ will hit 100 million users at a much more compact time period than Facebook did. The honeymoon’s not over, it’s just getting started.
