How to take advantage of a quiet workplace this week

It’s so quiet this week!

Dude. It is so quiet in my office this week. We’re working with a half-staff skeleton crew, and I haven’t heard a peep from clients since probably Dec. 23. I’m at work though, trying to get things done while I have the luxury of silence and no interruptions.

The Time Management Ninja is doing the same and has 10 suggestions for making the most out of a quiet workplace. His list includes things like cleaning out your inbox, getting ahead of a looming deadline, and planning ahead on tasks and projects. Oh, if only I could “select all” and “delete” my inbox messages and start 2016 fresh… And notice, “screwing around on Facebook” didn’t make the list.

His ideas are all great ideas, but I was curious about what the skeleton crew around me was doing with the quiet time. So of course, I asked!

While there is no one in the office, what are you doing with the extra time?

Ashley: “I’m getting hooked on a new podcast. I can listen and be entertained while prepping my calendar for the next few weeks and getting my inbox in order.”

Pablo: “I’m using some of the quiet time to update software on my computer, get the latest and greatest of some of the programs I use every day.”

Sara: “Reading blogs – not about fashion, but about our industry – just catching up the latest from the thought leaders. And the competition, of course.”

Me? I’m having lunch tomorrow with my boss. It’s been a long time since we’ve done that, and it’ll be nice to have some face time with the man who makes sure I get paid on a regular basis.

If I could add a number 11 to the Time Management Ninja’s list of 10, it would be to spend time with the people that are in the office with you. There may not be many, but use the slower times this week to get to know the new guy, catch up with your boss’s boss, or learn more about what that department down the hall is doing these days.

Things will get busy again next week, so now’s the time!
