Announcement flopped, users pony up anyhow
Despite allegedly real photos leaked of the iPhone 5 prototype, the recent announcement of Apple’s next iPhone (called the iPhone 4S, not the iPhone 5) came up short in many Apple fans’ eyes, many even turned to the internet to express their outrage.
Regardless of hilarious memes about how the iPhone 4S is just a faster iPhone 4, AT&T alone sold over 200,000 units in the first 12 hours it was available for pre-order, selling out of the 16GB version of the iPhone 4S. Compared to the last launch, the speed in which pre-orders hit 200,000 at AT&T has nearly doubled. AT&T and Sprint have both this weekend had “sold out” signs online for the 16GB (and least expensive) iPhone 4S, but Verizon did not.
The pre-order launch in other countries like Canada, Japan and France have experienced similar success, with analysts noting that despite fan outrage that the phone is not visibly different enough, sales are on pace to outsell any other iPhone launch in history. This news is promising for Apple in light of their recent morale loss, and could be bad news for Android manufacturers, despite their rise in prominence in the smartphone field.
