Not all Androids will get the new Ice Cream Sandwich operating system – full list

Not all Androids are created equal

Continuing Google’s tradition of naming Android operating systems after sweets, Android 4.0 is code named Ice Cream Sandwich and it is getting a lot of attention for being far advanced compared to Android 3.0; the tech world is buzzing. ZDNet goes into detail as to why developers will love Ice Cream Sandwich (most notably that 4.0 doesn’t break existing apps which everyone should love) and TechRadar has a full rundown of features along with screenshots.

So why is everyone in a tizzy? Because not all Androids will be getting the new operating system. The Android vs. iPhone camps love touting stats about how well each is doing in various category, but iPhones have one operating system and would never have the controversy surrounding which users get what that Android is about to undergo as Ice Cream Sandwich rolls out.

Nonetheless, Engadget has pulled together the full list of which Androids they have confirmed will get Ice Creamed, which devices officially will not, and they also outlined each manufacturer’s official statement.

  • ASUS – Padfone, Transformer Prime, Eee Pad Transformer
  • HTC – Rezound, Vivid (AT&T), Sensation (OG, XL and XE), EVO 3D (Sprint), EVO Design 4G (Sprint), Amaze 4G (T-Mobile), Sensation 4G (T-Mobile). It has been confirmed Nexus One will not get the 4.0 update; unconfirmed, but the HTC EVO 4G will not likely get it either.
  • LG – Optimus 2X
  • Meizu – Meizu MX, M9
  • Motorola – Droid RAZR (and Motorola RAZR), Droid Bionic, Xoom, Xoom 2, Xoom 2 Media Edition
  • Samsung – Galaxy Nexus, Nexus S, Galaxy S II Skyrocket (AT&T)
