Noticing a decline in productivity? This could be why.

Productivity across America taking a hit

Stealth mode is not just for your browser. It is the only way some people can visit their favorite sites while they are at work. More and more Americans admit to sneaking a peek at online videos when they are supposed to be working.

Data gathered by Wistia indicates that much of your lost productivity time may be due to your employees covertly looking at online videos. Here is a look at where they are spending their time and what you can do to redirect them:
64% of American workers admit to watching videos at work. Of these workers, 37% stated they were not concerned about getting caught; they are either very confident in their stealth skills, or their office has a more lenient video viewing policy, they survey is unclear about this.

The remaining percentage, however, are adept at going in to stealth mode. 47% of workers hide their mobile device under the table, while 42% excuse themselves to go to the restroom to take a video break. An astounding 9% of workers pretend to tie their shoes in order to get a few minutes of video time in during the work day.

What exactly is everyone watching?

So what videos are people watching that are so distracting, and is there a chance that your brand videos can distract other companies’ employees!? The majority (25%), are watching news clips. Fully 17% are watching company videos. Only 9% are watching TV shows;  a mere 4% are watching movies and 3% risk watching pornographic materials at work.

Even if your employees are temporarily distracted, it is good that the majority of people are watching news or company-related materials. If you find your productivity is on the decline in a noticeable way, allocating a break intended for this use could be helpful. But, if this is not feasible with your schedule, take heart in the fact that the majority of the videos being watched are relevant to your company and current events.
