Pantone releases the 2016 colors of the year: Rose Quartz and Serenity

And the winner is…

Everyone from interior decorators to web designers waits on pins and needles throughout the beginning of December every year to hear: what will next year’s Pantone color of the year be?

From rich Marsala to soft pastels

Well, Pantone has finally given up the goods for 2016, and there’s a surprising twist. Next year actually has two colors of the year. Introducing Rose Quartz and Serenity, two very pastel and soothing shades of pink and blue which Pantone hopes will work as a remedy against the stresses of the 21st century.

According to Pantone, “Rose Quartz is a persuasive yet gentle tone that conveys compassion and a sense of composure. Serenity is weightless and airy, like the expanse of the blue sky above us, bringing feelings of respite and relaxation even in turbulent times.”

Purposeful gender blur

Pantone also purposefully chose the shades of pink and blue to draw attention to society’s traditional gender associations with the two colors. Pantone believes that fashion is seeing a “gender blur” that will eventually change color trends in other areas of design, including interiors, digital design and print.

Complementary pairings

Along with these two colors of the year for 2016, Pantone released eight palettes of complementary color pairings. The palettes include everything from greys and browns to lilacs and maroons. Their advice to designing with Rose Quartz and Serenity is that, “the engaging combo joins easily with other mid-tones including greens and purples, rich browns, and all shades of yellow and pink. Add in silver or hot brights for more splash and sparkle.”

It’s all about the consumer

So as you’re designing this upcoming year, considering working with shades of Serenity and Rose Quartz; Pantone believes they can help you psychologically fulfill your clients’ yearning for reassurance and security!
