Pantone announces their 2017 color of the year: Greenery

It’s that time again!

Pantone’s Color of the Year is more than just a design staple that gives us a preview of what to expect in our living rooms and on our websites. It also offers a cultural description of why the shade is special. In 2015 we got the earthly plum Marsala, and in 2016 we got the perfect pair, twins Rose Quartz and Serenity.


So what is coming in 2017? Greenery. Or Pantone 15-0343 to be exact. A “fresh and zesty yellow-green” the company says “bursts forth in 2017 to provide us with the hope we collectively yearn for amid a complex social and political landscape.” Pantone notes, “Greenery symbolizes the reconnection we seek with nature, one another and a larger purpose.”

That’s a lot to ask from one shade of green, but Pantone is the voice in color. Their reputation as the standard in color definition and technicality has made them something of a pop culture icon. Even their color chips, with their bright band and plain helectiva font, are a well known symbol, and sometimes a source of design in and of themselves.

This is the Color of the Year’s 17th anniversary, and it might be a bit of self-fulfilling prophecy. The cosmetics brand LONDON has already created an official Pantone Greenery nail polish and eye makeup line, and other brands are sure to follow suit.

Expect to see this “trans-seasonal shade” on websites and flyers en masse this upcoming year.

Who picks the Color of the Year? A secret cabal of trend watchers who spy on fashion, web design, politics, and overall culture. Not only is the color a trend prediction, its a design prescription to what the group feels is the greatest problem of the time.
