Pinterest rolls out promoted pins in feeds

Pinterest adds promoted pins

The addition of Promoted Pins is latest in many updates the platform has been making over the last several months. These pins would consist of paid advertising spots from select retailers and businesses that will then appear in categorized Pinterest searches. Pinterest is beginning to roll out testing for the promoted pins.

Pinterest states, “For our first test, we’ll promote a few pins in search results and category feeds. For example, a pin for a Darth Vader outfit from a costume shop might be promoted in a search for ‘Halloween.’” This means ads are contextualized, which is good for your business because your content will automatically go to relevant search results/users. During the trial, the advertisers are not paying for ads; it is just a way for Pinterest to try the ads out. Pinterest is also actively encouraging feedback about ads as well.

A way for brands to advertise in feeds

The idea behind Promoted Pins was of course a way for Pinterest to generate money, but also, a way for businesses to advertise, without feeling like advertising. There are no banner ads or pop-ups, just relevant pins that look like any other pin you would see, with one difference: a Promoted Pin will have a label stating “Promoted Pin” at the bottom, along with a small “i” icon. When you click on the icon you will get more information about the pin.

What does this means for your business? Get ready to fine tune your Pinterest skills, because now more than ever, Pinterest is becoming one of the most popular places to market your product.

No worries if you cannot see the ads yet, Promoted Pins are only being shown to a small portion of Pinterest users during testing. When they are ready to go full-force, the ads will be visible both on the web and the mobile app. Their blog states that they are still trying to decide how to make Promoted Pins stand out from the rest, but for now, the Promoted Pins are integrated quite nicely.
