Interactive infographic site
Although not as simple as a standard infographic, Platlas.com, the social platform atlas has provided an interactive infographic diving very deeply into the driving principles behind Facebook, calling their site the “first ever social network ecosystem exploration tool.”
Platlas drills down from broad Facebook user behaviors down to the very specific actions taken by a user who is depicted in the center of the circle as the Facebook face icon. Each icon represents a specific area or action on Facebook ranging from apps to photos and events with the outer ring showing the various areas actions a user can take, complete with an explanation.
The company says, “Our goal with this project is to introduce a new and interactive perspective to the variety of actions users take on their social platforms,” adding that they “made sure to build Platlas with the most advanced and flexible technologies, using a mix of javascript, SVG (scalable vector graphics), a sprinkle of pixie dust, and a whole lot of math. Since no flash was used in the development of this page, we get much quicker load times, no plugin dependencies, and compatibility with mobile devices while maintaining the capability to create a highly interactive data display.”
Social media platforms change every day and Platlas seeks to keep track of these changes in a way that anyone can organically understand. They note that the current version of the Facebook Platlas is not complete as the network is intricate and changing rapidly, but they anticipate a complete version to launch soon.
The Platlas is helpful to expert veterans and social media newbies alike as it takes a bird’s eye view of how the site works and allows a user to drill down deeper into actions to almost get a three dimensional view of the complex network.
