Professional uses job as megaphone for animal rescue

Animal rescues always need promotion

While it is typical for a Realtor to say things like “and imagine how your sofa would look here,” or “this patio would look amazing with a new furniture set,” and there are standard comments said on tour in every home, focusing on features of the home and verbally pairing them with buyers’ belongings to get them to buy in by psychologically marrying the two.

Toronto Realtor, Paul Indrigo takes it a step further and asks during showings if they have considered adopting a rescued animal when they make the move – a subtle, yet powerful way to help local animal rescues. Indrigo has no official affiliation with any animal rescue, but says that having adopted a retired guide dog and being familiar with rescue projects, he is called to use his daily job as a means to promote the rescues.

How he slides it into the conversation

Indrigo said, “A big element of my approach is you the belief that ‘one should only move if its to improve their quality of life,” adding that in many cases, this means a move up or down and “possibly a pet added to the mix.” Many of his clients are loft an condo buyers, so in many instances, they are planning on living alone, or perhaps with Indrigo’s suggestion, a pet.

After representing Laura Mark and Paul Marek of Boston Terrier Rescue Canada, he has learned quite a bit about their project, so he casually suggests, for example, that the condo he is showing has a 30 pound weight limit for dogs, and that he knows of a Terrier available for adoption should the client become interested. So far, he has only received positive reactions.

Whether you are a Realtor or an ancillary service provider, consider adding rescue options to your pitch when entering a home or a scenario that involves a major life change. It proves your compassion and helps local animal rescues, especially if you can recommend a specific organization you have had experience with. Even offering to pay adoption fees as a move-in gift could be an interesting move – we look forward to seeing what you come up with!
