“Slow Down and Smell the Crabs”

This past weekend served as a reminder to me that I need to proactively set aside time to rest, relax, and rejuvenate.

If you’re like me, work tends to be pretty relentless and constant. A lot of that pressure and expectation I put on myself.

Throughout my career, I’ve never needed micro managers, time cards, or accountability partners. I am my own worst enemy. If ever I feel as though I’m slacking off or not doing my best, rest assured, I am ALL over myself!

The downside to this slight personality quirk is the tendency to get lost in the effort. To be so consumed in the ‘doing’ that I forget the importance of ‘being’ and the joy of ‘having.’

All too many times though, it’s not until I drop from sheer exhaustion, that I realize my sad state of affairs. There have been other times when a neglected client awakens me to my plight. And that’s a very unfortunate situation indeed.

So today was one of those badly needed, wonderfully mindless days. After church, my wife and I took the boat out onto Hood Canal, and pulled up our crab pots for the last time this season. We limited out, bringing 10 of the tasty Dungeness home with us.

Amazing how work makes you forget:

  • How beautiful Hood Canal and Washington State are…
  • How beautiful and precious my wife is, and how much I appreciate her friendship…
  • How thankful I am for my kids, and how much I enjoy being part of their lives…

I need to do a much better, more deliberate job of taking time to slow down and enjoy all that I have been blessed with in this life. Then, when I’m more rested, more relaxed, rejuvenated, I can better serve my clients in the manner in which they so deserve!
