Testamentor: automatically send messages, files to people when you die

Modernizing your end-of-life preparation

As Benjamin Franklin once famously quipped, “nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes.” Although it may be a morbid thought, it’s important to consider what will happen to your loved ones, your accounts, and your business after you pass from this world.

Planning for the end of your life should definitely include a meeting with your lawyer to discuss your last will and testament.

Testamentor is powered by Dropbox

And yet, a new website currently being tested in beta form may give you even more ways to leave messages behind for loved ones and colleagues when you depart for the hereafter. Testamentor is powered by Dropbox, a popular file hosting service offering cloud storage.

The new site allows you to set up a special Dropbox folder that is shared with your family, friends, and colleagues, but only after your online activity has ceased for a predetermined amount of time.

The site “automatically detects your online inactivity,” and when the conditions you pre-set are met, shares the folder with designated family members and colleagues. The site, like Dropbox, is simple and easy to use. Simply copy files into your Testamentor folder on Dropbox.

What kind of information should you leave behind?

Testamentor has many suggestions for the kind of information you may want to leave behind, including pet care, home maintenance, or financial instructions, lists of debtors, tasks for your employees, or login information for your online accounts. You can also leave more personal messages, such as videos, photos, or apologies.

The site is encrypted and protected by Norton Security, so all the files you post will remain private and secure until they are released to your friends and family.

Testamentor is currently in beta form, so when you try to sign up you receive a message indicating that you will be notified when the site is up and running.

You set the triggers for when these files go out

Mortality is inevitable, but you can use Testamentor to plan ahead, then rest easy knowing that when you’ve bit the dust, your closest will receive the instructions and messages you leave behind.

Testamentor allows you to set up a special Dropbox folder with important files and messages that are automatically shared to your family, friends or colleagues when you become inactive online for a set period of time (defined by you).
