New YouTube video editor has already enhanced four million videos

YouTube video editing

This fall, YouTube (which is Google) launched onsite video editing as demonstrated above, allowing users to edit uploaded YouTube videos while keeping the same URL so videos don’t lose view counts, they simply click “Edit Video” on their video’s page. The editing tools are not as sophisticated enough to replace a real estate videographer’s editing suite, rather is meant for simple fixes, mostly by amateurs.

Since the launch of the editor, four million videos have been enhanced by two million unique users, YouTube product manager Jason Toff tells Gigaom.com.

YouTube Software Engineer John Gregg notes the options for editing:

  1. Stabilize hand-held footage
  2. Rotate videos
  3. Boost colors and contrast
  4. “I’m Feeling Lucky” auto-correct

As a result of their partnership with Picnik, YouTube offers aesthetic effects just as offered for their photo editing tool:

  1. Black & white
  2. Lomoish
  3. Cartoon
  4. Cross Process
  5. Thermal and more…

“I’m Feeling Lucky” developed by an intern

Users are loving the “I’m Feeling Lucky” button which with one click makes major edits to improve the video quality and was actually developed by an intern from Stanford rather than a seasoned Google engineer (not the first time this has happened at Google).

Rather than describe it, check out the video below which was improved simply by clicking “I’m Feeling Lucky,” a feature that isn’t perfect, but when it works, users say it works extremely well.
