Tracking trends is much more than just entertaining yourself, it is important to brands to track their impact in social networking. There are thousands of people across the globe working on how to nail down every angle analytics can cover as the online space grows exponentially.
Mike Hendrickson of O’Reilly.com has an interesting take on Twitter trends where he visually compiles data from a variety of sources then organizes them according to their popularity.

While this may be sheer entertainment to you, it is a sign of how analytics are changing. Perhaps in another year, a new tool will be created that allows you to insert your name, other brands or search terms and visually compile them making the data you’re researching easier to understand as well as easier to express to others.
