How to add an unsend feature for your text messages

Instant (regret) message

Have you ever sent a text message (or an email) and immediately regretted it?

Since I’m 100 percent sure that you have, let’s proceed with a second rhetorical question: If you could download a magical app that allows you to make changes to an already-sent text—up to and including total deletion—would you?

Thanks to the folks over at unSend.it, your pipe dream can become a reality.

Annihilate your sent messages

UnSend.it functions exactly like your standard third-party messaging app, with one glaring exception – you can “unSend” (or, more accurately, “eradicate”) any messages you send. Better yet, you need not invite all of your friends to the unSend app to use it; unSend’s encryption allows you to delete or edit messages even if you’re sending them to a standard messaging app (e.g., iMessage).

While unSend is being touted as a texting tool, the team behind the revolutionary app is also including an emailing component, which carries small but powerful utilitarian implications for anyone from students to CEOs.

Trust no one

As we’ve learned all too well from Snapchat, removable messages are far from infallible; the odds that you will successfully delete your own message before your recipient has a chance to screenshot it are directly related to how much you trust your contact.

If your friends are anything like mine, this means that you shouldn’t send anything potentially embarrassing or compromising unless you want to relive that message every subsequent New Years’ Eve for the rest of your life. Bank on it.

Perfect solution, imperfect problem

Sadly, liability implications mean that you probably won’t be using unSend to delete sensitive messages while emailing or texting in the workplace. Even if you make a small error and try to edit your message, one screenshot could diminish your credibility and result in a whole host of legal issues.

UnSend.it is currently available for free in the iOS App Store and the Android Google Play Store.
