Opinion Editorials

It’s not a Zebra/Swann Issue, It’s a *Respect* Issue

The recent dust up surrounding a video had nothing to do with a video.  It has everything to do with respecting other people’s opinions.  We should all be able to agree to disagree on issues and we should also be able to debate merit rationally rather than using closed ended statements that do not open up dialogue.  In this case, it simply happened to be the worst case scenario played out for all to see and all reacted exactly the way that was expected.  Not as the expectation of a fortune teller, but the human nature response of being told what and how to think.

No one really cares if you like or dislike something, but at least have the courage to allow the opinions of others to be heard.  Regardless of right or wrong, there are a lot of very bright and intelligent folks that read and comment in blogs, and it is very important to allow their input to lend to the conversation– in doing that we reach the point of excellence.  It is in diversity and controversy that we rise to the next level of understanding.

This writer doesn’t need a shepherd, I have plenty of those already.  What I really hope for is a group of peers that lend to the conversation to elevate my own understanding as well as their own.  It is that moment when you begin to believe your own hype that you cease to grow, you fail the test of acceptance and tolerance, and become the paradigm you despise most- even worse, your credibility falters.  There is a lesson in this for all of us- to put ego aside, stick to the facts, provide great content, and allow the opinions of others to be heard, right or wrong.  Let the readers decide their own way forward.

It’s not even a Zebra issue, it is entirely a Greg Swann issue. Drunk on power and encouragement from loyal readers and contributors, Swann is well on his way to jumping the shark and going all Jessica Simpson on us. I started to get frustrated with BHB after every single post became a full one or two page editorial and now it’s dwindled into nothing more than a posting ground for the contributors to read and amuse one another. Greg Swann used to be an important voice in real estate blogging but that engine is all out of steam.

If any blog writer can take anything from the inevitable fall of Greg Swann it should be this: Don’t become drunk with power, forget who you are writing for or start writing novella length entries. Blogs are supposed to be short, easy to read entries that keep people in the know on the subject you write about. If not for Jeff Brown and Brian Brady I would remove BHB from my RSS reader right now. In fact, at this point, I’m not even sure that’s worth keeping it around for when I can just subscribe to their respective blogs.

Josh I shoved the entire BHB into my Google Reader “D-List”, which is to say it’s on “ignore” but still collecting information for the next Greg Swann attack on someone. Then subscribed to the individual RSS feeds of five of the BHB posters (who seem to be posting less and less frequently) I enjoy the most. You can see the links to do that under their photos on the right side bar on BHB.

I appear to be now fully blacklisted with commenting on BHB too.

I doubt many of the better BHB writers will remain with BHB through 2008. Swann has proved a couple times now that his defintion of friendship is that he’ll stab you through the chest.
