Wait, a 6TB hard drive now exists? For real?

Hard drives are getting pretty powerful

Western Digital released a 6TB drive last year, marking the first “helium-filled” model, and today, Seagate has announced their first 6TB, enterprise-class hard disk drive, which does not use helium, and boasts that it is 28 percent faster than their previous 4TB drive model.

Seagate claims their hard drive doesn’t need helium, which reduces friction and heat. A Seagate spokesperson said of helium, “We didn’t have to use helium to get to this capacity, and it’s 25% faster than their helium drive. You can rest assured, when we need it we’ll use it.”

The powerful Seagate hard drive has a humidity sensor that allows the drive to function, even in humi environments.

The new drive also comes in 2TB, 4TB and 5TB capacities and with either 12Gbps SAS or 6Gbps SATA connectivity.

Seagate is taking a different approach

Craig said the new enterprise drive can sustain 550TB in data writes annually — 10 times the 55TB workloads that Seagate’s best desktop drives can handle.

“This is the fastest-growing segment in the enterprise space,” the company said. “People today are still trying to use desktop drives for near-line storage applications.”

Because most of their products are sold to enterprise-level companies, pricing is not available, but have asserted that the drive will be the same price per gigabyte as their last release, a 4TB hard drive model. While not likely within reach for a small business or entrepreneur, the technologies are advancing at a rapid clip and will trickle down to the mainstream in no time. Are you ready?
