Revenge is a dish best served with humor
Last week, a restaurant owner in Enid, Oklahoma took heat for telling KFOR-TV that he hates gay people and would rather they not be around.
Obviously, it enraged many, and the typical talk about boycotts rolled around, but people from around the nation took to Yelp to serve their revenge, ultimately creating a parody business listing called “Chicaro’s Club,” writing it up as the “best gay club” in town, giving it low stars so its ranking falls, adding risqué of gay men, and editing details about the venue, including the price point which is now set at “$$$$” whereas it should be “$.”
In response to regular allegations that the restaurant owner refuses to serve anyone who appears to him to be gay, disabled, black, or Hispanic, Gary James, owner of Gary’s Chicaros, told the news reporter, “I’ve been in business 44 years, I think I can spot a freak or a faggot… I really don’t want gays around.”
He added that, “If I reached over there and slapped the sh** out of you, you should be offended,” he explained. “But to call someone a ‘chink’ or someone call me a bigot, that doesn’t bother me.”
When asked if he would call the reporter a “chink,” he indicated he would not. “Unless we were drinking.”
Ah yes, telling a reporter that she shouldn’t be offended by the word “chink” while on camera is a great way to convince the Oklahoma Attorney General’s office that you don’t discriminate.
Hundreds turn to Yelp to parody the owner
Instead of just ranting on Facebook about the alleged discrimination as many have over the years, some took to Yelp, offering hundreds of reviews, like “Owner Gary’s ex boyfriend, Tyrone Blackman, has opened up his own gay bar in southern Oklahoma. Tyrone says Gary’s club is by and far the best gay club in the States. Tyrone still pops in now and then and always brings with him the hottest gaggle of guys; it’s totally fun to see him and Gary doing karaoke together just like the old days, and it if it’s Leather Night, they’ll judge the Meat Inspection contest together. They are a real Simon and Paula duo!”
Most of the remaining reviews are too racy to be featured here, but some were quite humorous nonetheless.
While the owner has a right to free speech, so does every other American, many of whom have spoken out against his bigotry, which as he said, isn’t likely to bother him. Business owners that choose to exercise their right to free speech may be met with opposing free speech, right or wrong.
