We’re all getting older
Baby boomers are getting older, thus the American population is as well. According to the 2010 census data, America’s median age has jumped up five percent in just ten years. According to the census data, every state rose in age as well with only one exception – the District of Columbia.
Studying median ages of where you live is important not only from a political perspective (older states will emphasize health care for the elderly, and younger states will struggle with educating the large grade school population), but from a marketing perspective. If the demographic in your area is extremely young, emphasizing retirement homes to that demographic will fail and marketing three-story townhomes to retirees will flop as well. Those are extremely broad examples, but the point remains that knowing your area’s demographic can be the difference between failure and success in your marketing of homes or your services.
Take a note of your state and bulges toward the top of a state’s pyramid shows an older population with bulges at the bottom of a state’s pyramid show younger populations. It is interesting to see which states are dramatically younger or older than others.
