Have you ever wondered how traditional media, politicians and pundits often compare two seemingly unrelated items on a chart and proclaims causation? Food prices are up and so are auto thefts, therefore the fuzzy math is done by someone along the way, a graphic is created and is being presented as related facts when in fact, people are not stealing more cars so they can go buy more expensive groceries, nor are expensive bananas driving car thieves bananas.
Bloomberg.com took a swipe at the art of putting two unrelated facts together and proclaiming correlation or causation:
