
Everyone can have a hologram on their current phone
Running out of cool smartphone apps to show off to your friends? Here’s a nifty party trick that will have even the most up-to-date tech geeks oohing and ahhing: turn your smartphone into a miniature holographic projector!
Modern day MacGyver and YouTube user Mrwhosetheboss has created the following mind-blowing DIY tutorial:
Holograms are everywhere, friends
Holograms are all over the place – on our currency, our credit cards, and in comic books. Holograms are sort of a combination between a two-dimensional and a three-dimensional image. A photograph captures a two-dimensional image alone, but when you move a hologram, or move yourself to view it from different angles, it changes as though you were viewing a 3D object. After you turn your smartphone into a hologram projector, you’ll be able to observe a 3D image floating above your phone – magic!

As mentioned in the tutorial video (that you may not have watched yet, but you will), you’ll need to make a template for a trapezoid that is six centimeters across the bottom, one centimeter wide on top, and three and a half centimeters high. These measurements can also be doubled or tripled to make a larger holograph.
Once you’ve made the template, dig up an old CD case (because who listens to CDs anymore?) break off the sides, and use a box cutter to cut trapezoidal shapes from the clear plastic surface. Tape or glue the four pieces together to make a pyramid. Find and play a video on YouTube that is made specifically to create holograms. Place the pyramid small side down on top of your smartphone, and voila! – a tiny 3D image will appear to float above your phone. You’ll be able to view the hologram more clearly if you turn off the rest of the lights in the room.
