I Have a Love Hate Relationship with that Game
From a purely marketing standpoint whomever at Volkswagon came up with the idea of bringing slug bug in to their marketing campaign was brilliant. The commercials are hysterical, especially Stevie Wonder and you now have an entire nation of people looking for their cars on the road. The hate comes from the unexpected slug I receive, unfailingly with a full cup of hot coffee in hand, from one of the junior Altics who thinks slugging me is the absolute most fun of all.
I admit though, after the umpteenth slugging, I have finally gone on the offensive and since most of my kids can’t see over the front seat, ha ha – I am winning this war!
What’s my point?
It occurred to me the other day blogging is very much like playing slug bug.  You always need to be on the prowl for your subject and your articles need to pack a little punch.  I guess the more difficult question is how do you accomplish that? I frankly admit it’s a skill I’m still honing. Obviously my subject is sustainability but the AH-HA for me in recent months is that this is a much broader subject than green houses or energy efficiency.
As I have delved in to incorporating more green in my personal world, I have quickly realized it’s a way of life and my blog needs to be reflective of that. The beauty of this, is that you too can integrate some green in to your blog or website and you don’t even need designations such as EcoBroker or NAR’s Green to provide invaluable information to your warm market and client base.
For example, often times the environmentally conscious seem to also be interested in fresh healthy food. Here is a blog I wrote recently about our summer farmer’s markets, CSA’s and local farmers.  Most metropolitan cities have these, it’s an easy topic to research and farmer’s markets are a joy to visit.   Here is an article I did with some updated information about recycling in one area of town. Why not take a few minutes to research how recycling works in your community, i.e. drop off centers, what’s recycled, when they pick up, how to sort it. Here is one about an incentive our local electric provider is offering to have in home energy evaluations. Lot’s of communities have very successful programs that offer some cool perks to homeowners for participation. Why not promote those on your blog or website? This one is about some updates that have been made to the green fields in our local MLS.  Perhaps a seller might like to know what they can and can’t get credit for or a buyer would like to know exactly how the info is being sorted for them.
One I plan in the future is to discuss a program we have locally to provide affordable rainbarrels to anyone with gutters.  Also, what types of public transportation is offered in your area and how can someone utilize it best? What about walkability, are there parts of town that have more access to public parks, trails, or bike paths? My point is that there are all kinds of “green ones” in your city if you are looking for them, why not be one of the first to take a shot at them.
