As the Facebook versus Google battle gets hotter and hotter, it has leaked that Facebook will launch its own “Gmail killer” on Monday. The tech world has been buzzing about it with much excitement and even more criticism.
Fingers point to Facebook’s continuing refusal to respect privacy and we would add to that that Facebook hasn’t proven to be a very stable platform for us- notifications are often made days after an action has been taken, inbox messages disappear only to reappear later and the tagging mechanisms frequently don’t work well in Google Chrome. It seems that they have quite a ways to go on their existing platform before they launch email, but that’s just my personal judgment.
All that said, we predict thousands will flock to the “@facebook” email system regardless of stability, privacy or functionality. In the arms race that is digital media where people feel obligated to be all places at all times, we’ll see a large number of agents with new facebook emails and the Twitterati will likely be cheering about the new sexy emails they’ve gotten minutes before everyone else flocks to fb.
Despite my personal opinion and the lackluster performance of Facebook, again, we predict the masses will flock. We’d like to know what you plan on doing in this anonymous poll:
