Google Goggles updates
We’ve been waiting for Google to update their Google Goggles augmented reality smartphone app, and Googles 1.7 Android is finally here to make visual search faster and get better results. The app offers continuous mode where you can now open the app and simply scan without taking a picture or multiple pictures. Google says this feature works best with art, products, books and landmarks. Snapshot mode is still required for translating text.
Now, when Goggles recognizes a portion of text, you’ll get results with the closest match to the text, so they suggest testing it by pointing Goggles at part of a magazine page you are reading and instantly find a link to an online version of the story to share immediately or to read later. They say you don’t even have to show your smartphone the entire article, just some of it. Brilliant.
The “suggest better results” function has been used hundreds of thousands of times, so users have helped groom Goggles for improved visual search results.
Google Goggles 1.7 is available for all Android devices, but Google says you’ll need a device running Android 2.3 or newer to use Continuous Mode.
