Please, I am begging you to stop
Dear real estate industry, I have a bone to pick with you. When I am house hunting as a non-Realtor, sometimes I just want to read a simple house description.
I don’t expect you to be a copywriter and have perfect diction and I don’t even expect you to be a floral writer that makes me feel as if I’m actually in the house and I can smell the cinnamon buns baking and hear the sounds of the nearby creek bubbling as children play in the cul-de-sac.
I don’t expect you to not end up on Gwen Banta’s MLS Blooper reel. I am not asking you to take any classes in writing or to hire a copywriter for every single MLS description you enter.
But what I am asking is that writing in all caps cease. If you’re not aware that writing in all caps is the equivalent of picking up the phone and cold calling someone at the top of your voice and leaving them crying in the fetal position because you’ve made their eardrums bleed, then maybe you should step away from the internet.
I don’t know if it’s because many Realtors feel they have to be flashy to be seen or because a section of the industry is made up of MeMaws and PawPaws (names for grandparents in the South), but it has gone on for far too long and I implore you to stop. If you are not one of the offenders, I beg of you to point out to your coworkers how loud and obnoxious it is when they put an MLS description or ad (or email, etc.) in all caps.
Many Realtor boards fine for lack of pictures or for entering more than one link into a listing, so while we’re racking up fines, why don’t we add a fine for any Realtor that enters a listing description in all caps?
