3 smart devices Samsung is unveiling at CES (including a friggin’ belt)

Samsung has had a hot year, and at this week’s Consumer Electronics Show (CES), it looks like they’ll be unveiling some more fascinating smart devices to top off their offering.

Samsung on a hot streak

In 2015, Samsung remained a technological pioneer, with their introduction of several cool products: storage that fits in your pocket (Protable SSD T1), 88” UHD televevision, and cool speakers capable of delivering 360 degree sound (Samsung Omni Directional Experience).

This year, Samsung plans to follow tradition, and is unveiling three new products at the 2016 Consumer Electronics Show In Las Vegas, NV this week. The practicality of these products are debatable, but their coolness isn’t. Check out these quirky Samsung technologies expected to grace the showroom at CES this year.

First up: hand-motion controller for VR sets (“Rink”)

The first, and most useful product, is Samsung’s hand-motion controller for VR headsets called the Rink. This nifty device provides users with an interactive experience similar to Wii, by giving them control with simple hand motions. Those with a VR head set, can play tennis, or any other sport, and feel as if they are on an actual tennis court.

As VR gains popularity and exposure, developers and marketers everywhere, are finding new ways to incorporate the technology into their business, making this product attractive.

Second: a smart belt. A WELT.

The second product, is a smart healthcare belt, called the WELT. The WELT looks perfectly normal, and is able to measure the user’s waist size, eating habits, steps taken in a day, and amount of time spent seated. Similar to a fitbit, a summary is then concluded from the above information, and users are given recommendations for a healthier lifestyle. Dissimilar to a Fitbit, WELT looks like a regular belt, so others can’t tell that you are wearing it, for those who’d rather be healthy in private. Depending on price, and other capabilities, this product could be a hit for the health savvy.

Third: become a secret agent

The last, and most, perplexing device as far as practicality goes, is a strap contraption, that attaches to a smartphone or smartwatch, and allows users to hear the noises coming from said device. Once the strap is attached, sounds can be transmitted by simply touching your ear; a really cool way for aspiring Secret Service Agents to use their phone.

With the popularity and added functions of smart phones and smart watches, this product could possibly be a hit amid regular consumer; however I see this being more of a hit amongst tech collectors with a love for quirky gadgets and devices.

The takeaway

Ultimately, Samsung is definitely coming to awe us again this year. And though little is still known about these products, more information is expected to be available as they are unveiled at the 2016 CES. After this week we should have a better understanding of practicality, intended use, availability, and price.
