Help wanted

It’s no secret that the major way to search and apply for jobs lives within the worldwide web. However, you will still see the old school “help wanted” signs in business windows from time-to-time.

Whenever I see these signs, I wonder how many applicants they attract as opposed to a post on a job search website. Clearly, they must still garner some attention, but the audience reach is obviously not as large as compared to the Internet.

Now, your help is wanted

There is now a way that these two ideas are molded together. Through Job Spotter, community “now hiring” and “help wanted” signs are available to see on your phone.

Job Spotter is the offspring of Indeed, and is currently only available for Android devices. According to the description on Google Play, “Job Spotter is an awesome way to explore your community and earn redeemable points, all in the name of helping local businesses.”

See a sign, snap a photo

The idea is simple. If you see a hiring sign somewhere in your community, you take a photo of it and submit it to Job Spotter.

While it would be cool to say that this is all done out of the goodness of one’s heart in order to help job seekers and business alike, there is an incentive involved with submissions. For every photo you submit, you earn points that eventually translate into an Amazon gift card.

Help others and yourself

Therefore, it becomes a win-win that only involves a small series of steps. First, install the app. Second, check your neighborhood for hiring signs. Third, submit a photo of both the hiring sign and the storefront. Fourth, collect your points. Fifth, redeem your points for gift cards.

For every submission you make that becomes approved, you receive 50 points, which is equivalent to $0.50USD in Amazon gift cards. So, for every submission that is approved, you earn $1.

Scarce but enticing

While this is a great incentive and a great way to help the community, it may be difficult to chalk up serious Amazon coinage as hiring signs are limited in today’s virtual world. Nevertheless, Job Spotter offers several reasons to keep your eyes peeled when wandering around your community hunting for Pokemon.

And how ingenious is this idea from Indeed? They’re a job search site, and they can now feature jobs from companies that never even uploaded them – talk about a creative expansion method!
