Google Goggles Revealed, New Way to Search Introduced

Share

Oooh, googly goggles! Visual search introduced

googles gogglesToday, Google revealed Google Goggles, an intuitive way to search in the real world, independent of a computer. With Google Goggles, anyone with an Android phone can be out and about and take a picture of a landmark, turn on Goggles and you’ve just searched which will tell you information about the landmark. So, instead of a phrase you want Google to search for like “the White House,” you give Google an image (substitute a search phrase with an image) or even point your phone camera at a store and without even doing a separate search, it will recognize you by GPS location and know where you are… it’s simple, Google explains:

PC World played around with it today and shares some wicked screen shots that makes it easy to understand how it works.

The downside

Google Goggles is only a few hours old, so as you can imagine, it’s not very robust yet. If you’re in Clute, TX, it probably won’t recognize the IHOP as a location, but if you’re in New York City, you’ll probably have more luck with your visual search. If you Goggle search a book cover of a rare book, it may not be there yet, but the Bible or a Koontz novel will probably show up. It’s in its infancy and it’s growing, but this technology has some massive implications for the real estate industry which we’ll be outlining in the coming days.
