Celebrate Thanksgiving Locally

Celebrate

With Thanksgiving just a few short days away, I think that many of us have our thoughts focusing in on that celebratory annual feast.  While the turkey holds the place of honor at our table, it is the side dishes that I look forward to the most, well, aside from the pumpkin pie 🙂 .  How about you?

Go Local

Yesterday, my daughter and I had to pick up a few items so we decided to do some scouting ahead for the locations with the best looking produce and we found that getting just the right ingredients might be a challenge this year-and we live in sunny Southern California!  So I did a bit of digging around and found that Local Harvest has a great list of farmer’s markets and food co-ops which sell organic and sustainably grown produce all around the entire country.  Pretty cool!  They provide the address and a phone number, so you can call ahead to make sure the location is up to date.

What I thought was particularly sweet about the site is that with the info it provides you, even if you are going to be traveling out of town to visit folks, you just might get the opportunity to plan a stop at a local farmer’s market along the way and grab some of the freshest ingredients available.  In my experience, shopping at a farmer’s market is much less expensive than a supermarket and the quality is always excellent.  You can often find something a little extra special while you are there too.  You just might be able to pick up a few unique and edible holiday gifts for your clients, co-workers and special friends while you are at it.

Give the site a check out and not only will you be getting the freshest, healthiest foods available but you will be supporting the local commuity while you are it.  If you see something you just must have that you cannot get in your area, they do have some items available mail order .  I know for our Thanksgiving, we have a new stop we will be making on the way to Grandma’s house 😉 .  Maybe we will see you there.
