Quit Using That Tired Old Moving Checklist, Make it Useful

Same old same old

Are you still using the same tired old moving checklist printout from 1987 that you give to all clients when they contract? Do you have a checklist on your website that reads something like 1. set up utilities 2. pack your boxes 3. get a moving truck 4. move your stuff 5. clean your old house 6. the end?

There are several versions of that awful checklist and some have improved the list by adding the phone numbers of the utilities and even a moving and cleaning company (that pays referral fees). Then, there are universal lists that companies like Real Simple have posted online. But there’s got to be a way to customize your own checklist and even offer deep insight into the moving process.

How to spice up your moving checklist

Consider designing (or having designed for you) a checklist that can be seen online or downloaded in .pdf form for clients or future clients to print out. Not just design in how you say it, but make it visually appealing!

There are infinite ways this can be done, but a basic formatting structure could look like this, with a check list and tip list separated (click to enlarge):

So that’s an example of formatting, but what about how to spice up the actual copy? Spend time writing down a list of your last move- include scheduling, phone numbers for movers to call, local emergency information, organizing tips, packing tips, and whatever else you can think of. Moving suggestions are typically given in a timeline or grouped by function for ease of review.

Extra steps you can take:

Take an extra step and brand your moving checklist, not only visually with your logo, but with whatever theme your niche is. If you’re an eco-broker, give tips on how to make your move more green- where to find recycled boxes, cleaning tips that are chemical free, and how to pack a moving truck to save gas. If your niche is the move up buyer, give tips on how to outfit a new gameroom, and how to decorate with large pieces for over-sized, blank walls.

Another extra step you could take is to print this checklist out and hole punch it to be included in a moving binder you provide, or perhaps have it laminated with a magnet on back and an attached branded dry erase marker.

The bottom line is that moving checklists are another way to demonstrate niche expertise as well as the same thoroughness you use in your business and care taken on something as small as this that shows your clients your care for them and their process above and beyond your own pay day.
