SXSW Interactive launches new event, just for singles
SXSW has become a sort of mash-up conglomeration of folks from all of walks of life, travelling from all ends of the earth to do exactly what you’re doing there. It’s like a giant cesspool of networking: crumpled up business cards, sweaty handshakes, and first impressions on new connections that could very well change the course of your life forever.
But in Austin, it isn’t always all work and no play. Thanks to our pal Kathryn Irwin of the Southby staff, there’s going to be an actual event this year for singles called the #SXsingle Meet Up. I hope you don’t forget to pack your mingling slacks.
SXSW is more than just social
I understand that being at any conference with such a hodgepodge of strangers might lend itself to that “What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas” mentality. You figure the odds of running into most of these people in your day-to-day back in Boston are slim to none. The consequences of a one-night stand seem so minimal in the moment. Besides, that guy looks like he could be Brad Pitt’s stunt double, so you might as well go for it.
However, it’s important to note that Southby isn’t simply riddled with hookups and hanky panky – it has also been the birthplace of long-lasting relationships that have led to marriage, and even tiny lil SXSWers in baby carriages (not to mention endless learning, innovating, and networking).
It’s nice to be considered
If you’re feelin’ a bit optimistic, stop by Room 501 at the JW Marriott (110 E 2nd Street) in Austin on Saturday, March 14th at 5:00 PM sharp to partake in the festivities. There will be complimentary alcoholic beverages (take it easy, hoss, the night is young), a few activities, and more good conversation than you can shake a stick at. Whether Irwin is a matchmaker by trade (she’s not) or just doing her job, thank her when you see her.
It’s nice of her to think of us single guys and gals, especially when our Valentine’s Day wounds are still fresh (where were you when we needed you??).
