Facebook accounts for one in three display ads online in America

The power of Facebook

Facebook is capturing endless headlines these days and for good reason- it is a marketer’s heaven. ComScore’s new U.S. display advertising data is out and Facebook now accounts for 346.4 billion impressions in the first quarter of this year.

Those billions of impressions account for 31% of all U.S. ad display impressions up an impressive 5% since the last quarter of 2010 and has doubled since this time last year. It’s not just buzz about Facebook that is rapidly increasing, it’s eyeballs on the site.

Facebook has outpaced all others with Yahoo! taking second place with their 10% of the market.

What this means to you, Realtors

If you’ve never looked at advertising on Facebook, your competitors will politely ask us right now to shut up and not tell you to look into it. Get this- if you want to advertise to married men in Sarasota between 35 and 40 who are Baptist and Conservative because that’s who most of your clients are, for $50 you can get started with a Facebook campaign targeted specifically to them. Or you can hire a graphic designer and copywriter to create a flyer for you, then mail to five local subdivisions blindly. Your call.

Are most of your clients med students in Massachusetts that happen to be single women who are mostly liberal, you can target them and appear on their sidebar for pennies on the dollar. Or you can hire a flyer company to put your Glamour Shot and phone number on orange paper and gingerly placed on every car at the mall. Your call.

You get the point- Facebook owns the social graph and knows every tiny intimate detail about what millions of people, thousands of which are in your exact targeted demographic.

If Facebook keeps up this traction as more people discover the low learning curve and the low cost, the site will serve over a trillion impressions in 2011 alone. There is nothing else that compares for a small ad budget and this growth will continue.

Facebook advertising is fantastic. I have run a campaign lately, you can pinpoint target any demographic, it is true, as well as a combination of demographics you can begin to profile your audience. Including geography, religion, job type, lifestyle, what your audience eats, hobbies etc.
It's also easy to set campaigns up (much easier than Google Adwords) and pause, re-edit and change campaigns and adverts. Over time you can also look at trend results of your campaigns and make them even more targeted so you don't waste your budget.
