Google overhauls Docs
Today, Google announced a comprehensive overhaul of Google Docs. The redesign includes more collaborative tools, live edits, and more effective editing capabilities on top of the chat function that already existed.
What all of the coverage of today’s news is missing is that this overhaul means that the goal of Google Wave (real time editing and sharing alongside chat) is now part of Google Docs, making Google Wave less effective and less useful and hopefully spells the end for Google Wave.
I, for one, applaud the innovation of Google Docs because:
- I HATE Google Wave, even after using it extensively
- I use the heck out of Google docs because I live in the cloud and access my work from all over the place
- I’m not a Realtor, but even if I was, collaborative work is not a trend, it’s a normal part of business now whether amongst clients or coworkers.
Here’s the quick overview of Google Docs changes:
Watch this video and try to tell me that it doesn’t take the few attractive qualities in Google Wave and inserts them into Google Docs…

I did not try Google Wave, but I’ve spent the past few months migrating all my office forms that agents will need onto Google Docs. Everything from agent lists/phone numbers/contact info to the office manual and referral forms, etc.
Everything that an agent has to CALL ME at 5 pm on Sunday night to get, or run to the office after hours for, will be on Google Docs for us very soon. It should solve a lot of hassles.

I see it all becoming one suite eventually anyway- Google has this nasty habit of tinkering and not much follow through, so I’m not sure if Google even knows what’s coming or going…
