Do you own that picture on your website?
You hire a photographer friend to take a photo of your office, and you slap in on your website. Later, you hire a coder buddy to create a plugin for your website to do some tricky thing. Then, time goes by, your website/technology/project explodes in popularity, and you get an email from the coder or photographer wanting their cut. They do, after all, own the content and technology you’re using. You search through your contracts with them, and realize that you do not, have the rights you assumed you did.
This story is all too common. Enter Kunvay, a way to manage the ownership transfer of copyright and intellectual property rights online. Kunvay is the paypal of copyright and intellectual property transfer that provides a platform for people to transfer IP ownership online safely, especially when working with freelancers and creatives.
Founder Reggie Solomon tells AGBeat, “We make it easy for creativity to change hands with a free tool free tool creatives can use to transfer ownership of work to clients that works alongside or in place of traditional contracting, and is especially useful for small jobs where contracting can be a pain.”
Building a tool to simplify transactions
The Kunvay team is comprised of creatives that needed the tool for themselves, hence the company’s creation. Solomon added that “the sale of knowledge work is considerably more difficult to transact than the sale of physical goods, due to the legal complexities surrounding the transfer of copyright and IP. Just because you pay someone for knowledge work or creative work doesn’t mean you automatically own it.”
In order for intellectual property to be fully transferred it must be done through formal written agreement. Kunvay is a first-of-its-kind cloud-based end-to-end IP transfer solution. We’ve all heard the horror stories, but until now, the solution has been extensive legal bills, which many small businesses simply cannot afford, even when successfully up and running.
